Which decade (with poll)

It depends on how I feel like talking about it.

Which century is 2000 in??

 

I was going to vote for both but it wouldn't let me.

 

I vote for the 10's. IMO 2000-2009 was the zeros.

 

Mathematically speaking, 2010 is the last year of the 2001 to 2010 decade. As Salty said, 2000 was the last year of the 20th century, and 2001 was the first year of the 21st century. 2010 is the 10th and final year of the first decade of the 21st century.

I beleive I remember them saying this in 2000, it wasn't offically the beginning of the new decade, but the end of the old. I think it was the Y2K hoopla that threw people and now they aren't sure. But 1 is the beginning and 0 is the end, 1-10 kind of thing.

 

The measurement doesn't exactly start with an even number when Jesus' birth starts in BC 4 or 5, and the new timing starts in AD30 or ?. AD does refer to After Death. So when do we start century two?

And, does it really matter? I'll take 2000 as the start of the 21st century AD. I guess!

Zero's always end the string of tens. You can never start a count with zero as you have nothing to count. If this is confusing to you "Jim" then start counting in Roman numerals. Where X is always ten.

 

It is not so confusing to me. I was just pointing out that we didn't start from the numeral zero to commence the first century, but we levelled off at the end of each century and the beginning of the next.

A decade changes at 00, 10, 20, 30, etc. Whether I like that or not doesn't change that fact.

 

There is no zero year and no zero century. Year 1 was the first year of the first century. 1 plus 100 = 101 which makes year 101 the the first year of the 2nd century. Year 100 was the last year of the first century. In the same way, 2000 is the last year of the 19th century.

Add any number of 100s to 1 and the result will end up with an 01.

 

I thought 2000 was the first year of the 21st century, so I voted for the 2nd choice.

you can't have 1 thru 9, we count years in 10's, it has to be 1 thru 10, it's the 00's.

 

I picked 10's based on the thinking that 1960 was in the 60's, 1970 was in the 70's and so on.

Thinking about it now - the 60's were probably 1965 to 1973 - so who knows?

 

I just read an article on this topic the other day that decades begin with 0s, so the 00s were 2000 to 2009.
