While the Secret Service has instituted stringent screening procedures for all tourists who visit the White House, including children, federal agents failed to detect an illegal alien who used a fake ID and documents to gain employment as a supervisor of tent installation for White House social events, reports columnist Michelle Malkin in today's New York Post.

Posing as "Kelvin Rodriguez," a Mexican citizen named Salvador Martinez-Gonzalez worked for HDO Productions Inc., a company that designs elaborate outdoor settings for galas, weddings and government functions.

Martinez-Gonzalez had been ordered kicked out of the country by the Immigration and Naturalization Service in February 2000, but was able to evade the law and fool both his employer and the Secret Service through petty identity fraud.

According to the Post, Martinez-Gonzalez had access to the White House grounds, the Pentagon and NASA, and rubbed elbows with Washington's most powerful officials – from former President Bill Clinton to current Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne. Martinez-Gonzalez kept festive photos of himself with Clinton and the Cheneys as souvenirs to show off his insider access.

He was finally caught at the U.S.-Mexico border on Dec. 2 trying to use the photos to prove his citizenship to inspectors at the Laredo, Texas, port of entry.

A routine fingerprint and immigration database check showed that he had been apprehended in Brownsville, Texas, two years ago, and at that time was ordered to leave the country.

He should have been immediately detained for fraudulent entry and kicked out. Instead, immigration officials learned, Martinez-Gonzalez was freed.

According to the intelligence report, Martinez-Gonzalez then purchased a birth certificate from the real Kelvin Rodriguez, a Puerto Rican national who lent his identity to Martinez-Gonzalez. Rodriguez also helped Martinez-Gonzalez obtain a Social Security card, Maryland driver's license and a U.S. passport.

According to the report, Martinez-Gonzalez moved to the Maryland suburbs and began to work for HDO Productions, where he worked until sometime in the fall.

Company President Jerry O'Connell told Malkin he was not aware of any immigration problems and that Martinez-Gonzalez's departure had nothing to do with immigration-related fraud.

O'Connell told Fox News he was shocked to learn that his former employee may have been using fake documents.

The intelligence report indicates the FBI and Secret Service were both contacted by immigration investigators for further interviewing of this illegal-alien impostor.

Fox News reports that according to the U.S. attorney's office in Houston, Martinez-Gonzalez has been in custody in Laredo, Texas since Dec. 17.

BUT: Democrats & Republicans want 'em here, while they pander for minority votes, & both parties, in the interest of BIG BUSINESS, want 'em here for cheap labor (even though there's a Federal Minimum Wage Law, yeah right!). Another case in point: Malvo.

Gasp! Say it isn't so. 13 million people living here who weren't born to the wealth and privilege we enjoy. People born in the underclasses of impoverished nations coming here because of the plentiful opportunities and abundant resources.

Maybe we should ask the real Native Americans how to handle such a situation.

I as a US citizen am married to a british citizen
and there are 13 million illegals living in the whole of the USA yet me and my wife can not have that luxury I have to live here becuase of the INS!!! Is this democracy or what. WOW what a figure 13 MILLION people that is why I have been
in the UK for 20 yrs............ But god is on my

The 13 million are illegal. There are immigrants by the millions who are here legally, followed the law & should be welcomed with open arms.

It is the lawbreakers, those who are here illegally, this is referring to.

I personally know people who have wanted to come to this country LEGALLY or wanted to stay LEGALLY, who had to have my Congressman intervene because of INS problems. The INS is a bureaucracy which has their priorities askew - they make people jump thru hoops who want to be here legally, fill out the paperwork, etc., but TURN A BLIND EYE TO ILLEGALS!

Joshua, you really don't know the difference between legal immigrants & illegal aliens? (or is that another one of those "gray" areas for you liberals, situation ethics when it comes to breaking the Rule of Law or not breaking the Rule of Law)

About those native Americans....seemed happy enough to get $12.00 for the sale of Manhattan Island, as I recall....

PS: If we aren't going to enforce the Immigration Laws on the books regarding illegal aliens, then we should do away with all Immigration Laws. Period. Why not just admit to American citizens that we do have wide open borders & let anybody & everybody come on in....

But that would put a lot of INS employees out of a cushy government guaranteed job, benefits, and pension.

Of course, that would OFFICIALLY ignore the Congressional mandate of our US Constitution to defend our borders & provide for the common defense.... when in essence, what we have now is an unofficial ignoring of the Constitution.

Maybe so but for us law abiding people it seems unfair for me to be punished for being american and not being able to live with my wife in the USA legally. When illegals just walk on in with no problem at all. The paperwork alone would put anyone off immagration. But to read 13 MILLION people live illegally and the Government says it OK, well that gets to me just a BIT.....

I thought you said that the borders should be closed? why have you changed your mind?

there you - that is the reason why illegal immigrants are not rounded up and thrown out - so what is the solution?

Simply throwing them out is going to create a number of difficulties:

- who is going to do their jobs (given that most americans would not)
- what would the impact be to business of 13 million odd jobs suddenly coming under employment regulation?
- what if businesses decide to relocate overseas to control their cost base?

Illegal immigration is a problem, but let's at least report accurate information:

The INS reports that there are 6 million (not 13 million) illegal immigrants in the US.

40 percent of all illegal aliens reside in California.

60 percent of illegal residents entered the United States by sneaking across the border, and the remaining 40 percent entered legally but overstayed their visas.
