Just heard that Delta State University has "The Fighting Okra!" Go team!

Beats the Duke Blue Devils, Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, and Tennessee Volunteers by a long shot, imo.

What are the best team names you've heard of?

I think "Aggies" or "Boilermakers" has to be among the most unique.

The "Packers" aren't bad, either. Ha! A pun!

When I was a freshman in high school, our basketball team played in the state quarterfinals against the Hoopeston-East Lynn Cornjerkers.

Some years ago a radio station in Texas did a high school game of the week [football] and in their post game show they had a feature, "Most Unique Team Names." They located schools from all over the country with unique names and interviewed someone who could remember the selection or at least had some 'insider' knowledge. I seem to remember only 3 right now-- the Fighting Gorillas, the Scrappers, and the Artists. I don't remember where any of these were, except the Artists one was somewhere in California. The interviewer asked the school superintendent whether their opponents put up signs that say things like "Deface the Artists," and he said no, that in their area they "have good sportsmanship." Sounds like fun, huh?

I also remember going over my Texas Football magazines and noting the most appropriate team names. Some of those were:
    Muleshoe Mules
    Farmersville Farmers
    Hamelin Pied Pipers
    Winters Blizzards

The first three years I played football in highschool, we didn't even have a name. We were just "the Palmyra High School Varsity Football Team".

My senior year, the chamber of commerce held a contest to name the team.

The winner (and this was the winner, mind you) was "the Pals". So we were the Palmyra Pals.

We took it on ourselves to change it to the Palominos and I think it's been changed in the twenty years since then to the Mustangs.

    I voted for the Cougars.

our AA baseball affiliate in Montgomery AL is named the "Biscuits."

They were ridiculed like crazy at the beginning.

Now, they can't keep enough merchandise on the shelves.

Another good one from minor-league baseball: "The Lansing Lugnuts."

    The infamous Toledo Mud Hens

    Georgetown Hoyas

    Iona Gaels

And maybe the best of all, Auburn University, the team with three nicknames:
    1. War Eagles
    2. Plainsmen
    3. Crimson Tigers
