(this in no way is an indication of an additude that we should not help the hurrican victims)

was N.O. always below sea level?

Let see if I understand. we have a city below sea level with levies to keep the water out. in is near a body of water that produces hurricanes almost every year. it has been vitually destroyed. and now they want the rest of the country to rebuild it so it can get destroyed again. first we should either figure out a way to stop the hurricanes or at least fill in the hole so it is above sea level.

The N.O area used to be a marsh-like area, built up by deposits of silt by periodic flooding of the region. Early inhabitants of the area understood this, and simply lived with periodic seasonal flooding. Over time, the levee system was built to control flooding, but in doing so, the natural proccess of laying down silt was interrupted. The result has actually been the loss of some of the land over a few decades.

Whenever we interrupt nature and don't compensate, nature reacts. That's what happenned post-Katrina. But humankind never learns, do they?
