Here's a new “top shelf” favorite.

Pi is a teen from southern India.
The first chapters show him seriously searching for God, devoting himself to the study of Christianity... and Islam... and Hinduism.
At one point he asked his parents permission to be baptized… and asked for a prayer rug, amusing his parents who generally ignored religion altogether.

It’s only after the first portion of the book that the action happens.
His family sells the zoo and ships the animals to other facilities, accompanying many of them on a slow boat to Canada.

But the ship has trouble and sinks, leaving Pi, the sole human survivor, on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger.

The book and the boat end with a thud, leaving one to wonder what really happened.

This is a deeply symbolic book that explores the meaning and worth of “religious” faith.
