Mark 15:42, . . . And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, . . .

It seems most readers understand that evening to be our Friday.
Jewish reckoning our Friday evening would already be the start of the Sabbath.

But the start of the Jewish Preparation Day would be our Thursday evening.

On and on it seems we must suffer yet another discussion over what day something happened and miss the message of the gospel.

On what day do you think the evening of Mark 15:42 was on? Was it the beginning of the Sabbath or the beginning of Preparation Day? Remember the Jewish days begin at sun down.

LOL, why do you constantly quibble over what day, rather than present the gospel message, just as Jesus did?

    * Because there is one actual knowable historical date.

    * There are incorrect dates.
    Some of which are:
    Nisan 14th.
Julian date April 7, 30 AD
Julian date April 3, 33 AD
Julian date April 5, 30 AD

Yes, those incorrect dates have their reasons.

So long as we continue to be persuaded of incorrect dates, there remains reason to discuss the issues.

The understandings of Mark 15:42 is the evening following the day Christ was crucified is relevant.

    My thoughts.

From and the evening and the morning is the first day of Genesis 1:5 every seventh evening and morning was an appointed time by God, a holy convocation, a day of rest. Every sixth day was the preparation for the seventh day,

Methinks God showed his people this before the law was given in how the gathering of the manna was to be done. On the sixth day to prepare for the seventh day, a day of rest they gathered twice as much.

Also God had established seven annual days as a day of holy convocation, a day of rest. Those seven days also had a preparation day.

The preparation spoken of in Mark 15:42 was the day before the first annual, holy convocation, day of rest. The fifteenth day of the first month. The fourteenth day of the first month, the LORD"S passover was always a preparation day.

Decide for yourself what day of our Roman week that fell on for it would change, however IMHO I believe that particular preparation was on a Wednesday. ---- Here is why.

I believe the women rested on the fifteenth day of the first month, a holy convocation, a day of rest, During the morning hours of the sixteenth day of the first month they bought and prepared spices to anoint the body of Jesus but that took them all day and the weekly sabbath began that evening therefore they rested the weekly sabbath the seventeenth day of the first month per the commandment and then went to the tomb just before daylight on the eighteenth day of the first month the Roman Sunday.

BTW If I understand correctly, one duty of the fourteenth day of preparation was to clean and remove all leaven from one's house in preparing for the appointed time of unleavened bread beginning the evening of the fifteenth.

The problem is that we cannot truly know the exact date.

The 1st Century Jewish calendar of events was dependent on the 1st century Jewish counsel. We do know that they had made concessions to facilitate the Festival, priestly ritual, and private observance.

I am not sure why people seek to determine exact dates of Chriat's birth, His crucifixion, what star was in the sky to lead the "wise men", the location of the Ark......it all seems to express doubt.

    I disagree.

The fact remains dates have been proposed.
    Nisan 14th.
Julian date April 7, 30 AD
Julian date April 3, 33 AD
Julian date April 5, 30 AD
    And few others.

    It is worth discussing them.

Then there is a prospect that there can be no possible date. In which there can be no crucifixion.

I know you disagree. But your disagreement is based on using a type of schedule we know that....while probably should have been used ....was not actually utilized by the Jews in the 1st Century.

We have the schedule used in the 1st century. We know this from Temple texts.

And yes, the average Jew knew there was corruption in the Temple. We also know this from Jewish texts.

But the fact remains that we cannot know the exact date.

The problem, of course, is those who rely on these things (knowing the exact dates, exact locations of the crucifixion, exact tomb where Jesus was buried, exact age of the Earth, etc.) practice a type of idolatry by relying on human wisdom.

That doesn't mean we can't hold opinions about these things.

I would think opinions held can and should be discussed.

The evening of what day of the week and why?
Mark 15:42, And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, . . .

Sun down is the beginning of the next day per Jewish reckoning.

If our Friday then the beginning of the Sabbath.

If our Thursday the beginning of the Jewish Preparation Day.

I read somewhere that due to the population surge in Jerusalem, southern Jews would begin their day at dawn, which allowed for Passover on Thursday. I have taken a brief glance across the net, but can't find anything to substantiate this.

    God bless.

    Covers a lot of material.

:It is quite likely that these events (which transpired on the day of Thursday, Nisan fifteenth) were in the minds of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus when they said, "And beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done." Luke 24:21. To those looking on, the sealing of the tomb and the placing of the Roman guard were very much events that were to be included in the burial of the Lord Jesus Christ. Since these words were spoken on Sunday, and since the final steps of the putting away of the Lord took place on Thursday, the two disciples were absolutely correct in their statement of time.'

But puts Mark 14:12 it's day before. Which has zero Biblical support.

'And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?" Mark 14:12. This brings us to the day of Tuesday, Nisan thirteenth. This was our Lord's last day '

The distinction between sunup and sundown would be this: southern Jews could partake of Passover on Thursday, northern Jews on Friday. The Lord would have already partaken of Passover the evening before, whereas those who persecuted Him would do so the following evening. He would have been crucified on Friday, in my view, having partaken of Passover the previous evening.

I think one stumbling block some have is trying to take three says and three nights literally, where technically the Lord would have to be dead three 24 hour periods. This is a debate that will never go away, lol.

Suffice it to say that Christ died for us, rose again the Third Day, returned to Heaven and sent the Comforter that we might have life. What more do we need to know?

    God bless.

On and on the quibbling spews forth, with nary a word about why Jesus laid down His life as a ransom for all.

Where do you find this distinction in Scripture?

1 Corinthians 15:1-4, . . . the gospel . . . how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: . . .

Is a verifiable event in history. That can be discussed.

That's just it: as I said I read this somewhere and cannot find the information now.

But it makes sense if we follow the account of Scripture: the Lord partakes of Passover, He teaches through the night, is taken, and the following day crucified. Both days are called the day of preparation ...

    Matthew 26

17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?

18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.

19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.

20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.

    Matthew 27:62
Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,

(If I read this correctly, this is the day after His crucifixion)

    Mark 15

39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

    40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

41 (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.

42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,

43 Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.

    Luke 23

51 (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

    Here we see ...

    John 18

28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

Those who crucify Christ have not yet partaken of Passover, whereas Christ and the discples had the previous evening. We know that the Lord did not violate the observance of Passover by eating it on the wrong day, thus in some way it is either acceptable for Passover to be observed within that 24 hour period, or, His enemies are in violation of its observance.

But we do see the disciples prepare the previous day, and it is on that day they observe Passover (that evening). For myself, a differing reckoning of the beginning of the Day makes sense, but, there is zero Scripture to support that. It would seem to me that the previous evening would have been Thursday. Some have made a case for Wednesday. The intervening teaching found in John 14-17 would seem to me to have taken place early Friday morning.

    God bless.

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 1 Cor 15:3,4

John 11:9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

I do a lot of wondering.

I wonder how many hours were in that day he rose? The seventeenth of Nissan
I wonder how many hours were in the day before? The sixteenth of Nissan
I wonder how many hours were in the day before? The fifteenth of Nissan

I wonder if the nights had any hours?
