Only after Solomon warns his son about foriegn women does he go on to also warn him about doing what they do: "tarry long at the wine".
Notice Solomon specifically says "tarry long".
He isn't talking about a glass of wine at supper.
Perhaps it is you who should take a longer look at this entire passage.....
It seems clear that nothing at all is going to talk you into reading verses in context OR letting Bible explain Bible.
But the one thing I am glad about regarding these ridiculously long 'wine' threads is that the people who have been reading them have now seen what the argument is about.
I started to start another thread, but didn't want to... Don't you love BB!
We get on one topic, and it gets worn out... I really love it!
Anyway, I was wondering if those who are for complete abstinence would be against cooking with wine?
What do you use as a substitute for wine in recipes?
Is cooking wine OK?
I am really interested...seriously.
I don't drink, nor buy alcohol, but I love to cook, and some recipes I have never used, because I don't know what to substitute for the wine....
If I need to start another thread I will, but if somone could give me a quick answer I'd appreciate it.
The reason I do not drink wine is for the sake of the lost world. If I purchase, consume, sell or make any kind of alcoholic beverage, and a lost sinner knows about it I have just ruined my influence with him
I went to a restaurant that used wine in their cooking. I asked about it. They explained how all the alcohol was completely cooked out or evaporated from the dish being cook. There was nothing left but the taste. I had no problem eating it therefore. What I would have a problem with is going out and buying the stuff in order to cook with it, lest I be a stumbling block to a weaker brother, and they see me and think that by my buying it, I have now set my approval on drinking, whereas that is not the case at all.

Several years ago---our daughter came down with a bad case of Lice!!! Now---it ain't a shame to get Lice-----its a shame to keep 'um!!!
We tried everything to get rid of the pests----and my daughter's hair is as thick as carpet----somebody gave my wife a remedy. Coat the hair to the scalp with Vaseline Petroleum Jelly----and then rince the Jelly out with beer!!!
We were desperate---we had tried everything short of a US Marine "crop" cut----and for a 10 year old girl---the Marine cut wasn't lookin' good!!! Know what I mean???
Anyway---my wife decided to try the Vaseline route-----but(and it was a big one) we needed a six pack of beer!!! Here's an SBC preacher---teetoter---and his wife the same----anyway---long story short---she decided to go to a grocery store 40 miles away from home to get the stuff----and when she got there----she still didn't have the "guts" to buy the beer---so she asked a fella in same grocery isle---"If I give you some money---will you buy me this six pack???"
She explained what it was for and said she was a preacher's wife---and couldn't buy it herself, etc.
"Sure will, M'am!!!"
I'd have given my arm to hear her explain why she needed that beer!!!!
That is exactly how I feel... so I wonder if there are any cooks here that would know a good substitute for the wine.
BTW, i love beer battered onion rings,
but can't make them at home for this same reason.
No, I don't have a problem with eating anything with wine or beer in the recipe, because the alcohol is cooked out, but I would love to fix some of those recipes at home.
The context of this passage is not a command directly from God.
It is a passage of wisdom, and as you have done with every single passage of scripture you have quoted in your entire temperance campaign, you've taken this one out of context.
It is clearly a passage about drunkeness, not just drinking.
The idea of gazing, in the Hebrew word you rendered, is to be obsessed or fixated on something.
It is not saying not to drink wine, it is saying not to gaze on it like you are addicted to it.
Your continued attempts to push your views about drinking alcohol in these threads is bordering on an obsession.
You're going to work yourself into an ulcer, fretting about the fact that Christians are free in Christ to make their own decisions without consulting you.
Ya'll obviously don't live in my town!
Here if you are seen with wine in your buggy, there WILL be someone to ask you what you are doing with it!
We are a wet city in the middle of a dry county.
And when someone asks, I simply tell them what I'm going to use it for.
Easy as pie.
I've even gone to the ABC store to buy whiskey, cause T makes an incredible bread pudding with whisky sauce.
The reason folks think buying wine in unchristian is because the church has been to long associated with temperance even though there is no Biblical basis for such.
Some of my best times talking about the Lord have been over a few beers.
One reason why it was so powerful is because my doing so busted up the stereotype people have of Christians--a stereotype that many here give credence to.
May I remind you of 2 Timothy 3:16, 17?
According to tose verses, that passage from Proverbs 23 is from God; for reproof, for doctrine, for instruction in righteousness (abstinence is part of righteousness), for correction.
It is given so the the man of God may be perfect and furnished to good works.
No, it is more than Solomon talking with his son, it is God talking to man.
And you mentioned it is wisdom.
There is wisdom in not having experience with alcoholic beverages; there is foolishness in refusing to obey God's Word and drink alcoholic beverages... even in moderation!
And those who do drink are bordering on drinking themselves into an ulcer.
In 1 Timothy 3:8, we see:
"Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;"
There is no prohibition on wine, it's just the deacons are not to be given to much wine.
"Not holding the mind with much wine."
This attitude gives way to over-indulgence.
