Do our thoughts originate in our brain? If thoughts originated in our brain then we would be prisoners of our brain, helplessly dragged along as its chemical/electrical processes determined our thoughts and even our morals and emotions.

The Bible says that man's inner turmoil, insecurity, lust, anger, conflict with himself and others, and any other "emotional problems" which beset him are spiritual at their root (2 Corinthians 7:1; Galations 5:16; Colossians 1:21). They result from man's rebellion against God. Therefore, the solution to man's emotional and spiritual problems is reconciliation to God---not anti-depressant pills. Whatever happened to sin? It seems as though sin has been relabeled as "disease" and "illness"

    You are very fortunate indeed.

I been married to the same woman for 45 years and she has been plagued with migraines all her life. I used to have to carry her to the car every week and take her to the doctor for a pain shot and then carry her in the house put her in bed, close the door for it had to be dark in the room with absolutely no noise where she laid for 3 days. We finally found a pill called flourcet which makes her migraines tolerable where she taught school for over 30 years with them. She still gets the migraines and sometimes the pill won't work so again I have to close the bedroom door where it is completely dark and silent for about 3 days. One side of her face has dropped slightly so I think she had a small stroke but the doctors say not.

Let's just say God's hand was upon me. I am not one who believes in luck. That is what that word 'fortunate' means, isn't it?

I had droopy face on one side and was told I had had a facial stroke. 'Bell's Palsy', I think they call it. Lasted for about a month, mouth was slightly twisted because of the drooping.

They wanted to put me on meds then, but I refused. I just like to trust God for my healing.

As far as the glasses, Linda can tell you I do not use them. I cannot see through them. My mother put glasses on me since I was 2 years old and I just grew used to having them on.

My eyes are too far shot to get glasses that I can see out of. These glasses are the thickest they come and not helpful at all.

Also, my wife just had cancer surgery 2 months ago and they had to put her to sleep to do the surgery. They gave her medication to put her to sleep which works on the brain and blocks pain or a person could not stand to have their body cut open. Fortunately she did not have to have treatments or she would of lost her hair also. If you don't have these kind of troubles then you are very fortunate for my dad never had a headache either in his entire life but he died at 42 and he was no better Christian than any one else.

'Bell's Palsy' is where a nerve become infected and swells where it passes through or close to a bone. It will go away on its own. That is not a stroke. I had 'Bell's Palsy' also, scared me too. I realized I couldn't whistle at first then couldn't spit then face dropped.

I wouldn't condemn your glasses for the world and no matter what you say or believe I will never turn and use your afflictions against you.

Brain - like computer hardware - the physical house of thought
mind - like computer software - the non-physical house of thought
    There is a physical Brain disorder called 'depression';
there is a mind disorder called 'depression'.
We are saying that antil-depressants can be used to treat
mind disorders, but we mean 'brain disorders'. This treatment might be lifelong.

gut - like computer hardware - the physical house of eating
digestion - like computer software - the non-physical house of eating

We discuss 'digestion problem' and treat the gut with physical
drugs - some of which are lifel-long treatments. No problem here.

The discerning person will see no difference between
    'digestion' and 'mental (mind)' problems.

BTW, 'tears my gut apart' is a saying of spiritual importance.

The day they can diagnose depression with a GI scope, your chemically imbalanced analogy might have some merit.

    Mental illness is a myth?

I dare say my sweet friend with schizophrenia would disagree with you.

As a child of a schizophrenic, I'm going to disagree with you!

Until you've walked a mile in my shoes buddy, you have no idea what you are talking about.

What's the verse, "judge not lest ye be judged by the same measure"? Better pray you never find yourself in need of a "mind altering" drug!

Your inability to admit that some people have brain (mind) disorders is astounding, and only indicates your lack of understanding in the field. However to answer your question from a Biblical perspective: Yes, our thoughts originate in our brain. Your stated conclusion is illogical and non-Biblical.

Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart (mind or brain, the organ used to think).

Matthew 15:19 For out of the heart (the mind or brain) proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
I don't disagree that man has to be reconciled to God, and I don't think anyone on this board does. In Biblical times there were many diseases that the common man attributed to demon possession that really were not. You are falling victim to the same trap. Instead of calling it demon possession you call it a mental illness, a spiritual problem, anything but an actual sickness. You are like the cults that refuse to see doctors when sick. By the same theology, if practiced consistently one could end up being charged with negligent homicide because they attributed what was a legitimate sickness of the brain to a spiritual problem which ended up in a death.
I know of a Batist Pastor in North Carolina who still believes that all epilepsy is caused by demon possession. Your beliefs run the same parallel. Sad, but true.
Every person needs to come face to face with sin, repent, and get right with God. Some of those people also need to come face to face with their own disabilities (whether of the mind or of the body) and use the God-given intellect that the Lord has given us to alleviate symptoms of conditions that may never be cured until the resurrection takes place. We wait for the redemption of our bodies.
Neither our salvation nor our spirituality is based on whether or not we take a pill.

It's no wonder that Christians are having such problems with depression. They have no motivation to go on living. They got saved and now they have to sit here and cope until the Lord comes back. I'd probably want to die too.

You are right Jim. Even Christians have to "cope" as you say in this world until the Lord comes again and gives us a glorified body.

Romans 8:22-23 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

When a person gets saved God does not immediately take him out of this world. He leaves him in this world, in the same body, to be a witness to others around him. He doesn't automatically heal all his diseases and infirmities just because he is saved. That is not a drawing card for salvation.

But we are supposed to have a hope, and these people don't have it. Jesus promised us that if we suffered we would reign. Why shouldn't we suffer gladly then? Don't we believe Jesus?

You will be arguing your point with a wall when you do so with Standing Firm in Christ. Better to agree to disagree than to battle with him. Standing Firm should not wear glasses as his eyes should be well....not a prescription from a doctor.:tongue3:

Meds are needed for those that are sick. Depression...true depression is a sickness. It's not "just a bad day" pill....but a phycial and psycholgical sickness. Sometimes meds can be taken for a few months to a year...sometimes a lifetime if it is a chemical inbalance. There's nothing wrong in taking the med if it is needed....it's like taking high blood pressure med or insulin.

Find a doctor you like and trust....get his/her opinion....and go from there.

    :praise:

"these people"......I don't care for that term when referring to anyone or any group of people. It's rather predjudice.

Have no hope? If you've ever been at the very bottom and you're not on medication...one thinks there's no hope.

If you find a great DR that will take good care of you....follow you carefully....keep meds in check....then "these people" can start living again.

If you've not been there....you have no way of understanding. It would be like me talking about open heart surgery from the 1st person and I've never had it! I can't do it.

Those of you that judge people on meds too quickly I pray that you're never stricken down.

    Lisa,

You are forgetting one thing. I have already said I cannot see through these glasses. If you look close at my avatar, you will see I have a white cane in my hand. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that I am blind. The glasses are just decoration at this point in my life.

What about the anti-depressants now? decoration?

I have been there. Remember? Wheelchair, false imprisonment, blindness. I can say I have had some depression, but not anything to say I would rather trust pills than Christ.

No my friend...not decoration at all. Needed....God knows that. Someday I am hoping that I might come off med...but I've been told to expect med for life. I have high blood pressure as well....so, I've learned to accept it.
    Doesn't mean I like it...but, I accept it.:saint:

I'm sorry and I apologize. I was unaware that you are blind. My most sincere apologies. I wear glasses/contacts myself, but not for decoration. Once again, I can't see too well without one or the other.

But, "some depression" is not clincally depressed. 'Some depression' refers to several bad days in a row....or weeks. Clinical depression is very different. I went years without help...many years.
