Had too much coffee and bought the "farm," hmm? :tongue3: Reminds me of Andre the Giant and his little buddy and their punning contest on "Princess Bride."

Do you have any documentary proof of this? According to the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, caffeine is, indeed a drug, with many effects, proof of physical dependence, and evidences of withdrawal. (http://www.acnp.org/G4/GN401000165/CH161.html)

Not that I imagine people will listen to such things, because their desire to drink coffee is greater than stepping back and checking their facts.

The question is this: Do we honor God by drinking a substance that includes what science clearly calls a drug?

However, here, there is a knowledge, because of the facts that caffeine is, indeed, understood by science, to be a drug, in the same "category" (for lack of a better word) as nicotine (see above article.) Sugar, for most people, lacks the addictive qualities needed to classify it as a drug. For some, it could be seen that sugar is, indeed, a drug, but I wouldn't claim to be interested in delving into such a topic.

Back in 1988, I was hired on at Christopher Newport College in Newport News, Va. It had been years since my studies on the Human Anatomy, and I thought I knew most of what needed to be known to teach a class on the importance of good eating habits.

While reading required books mid-term my second semester of teaching, I came across an interesting statement.

While I never felt an effect from the coffee I drank, I was drinking more thhan 10 cups of coffee a day at that time. I immediately changed my intake of coffee.

The first thing the cardiologist told me when I was having heart problems was to stop drinking coffee.

Of course, I had already stopped drinking caffeinated coffee years ago because it raised my anxiety level.

The 2 to 3% of caffeine in Decaf doesn't bother me because I only drink 1 or 2 cups a week.

I'm surprised no one has condemned nicotine! It kills more people than coffee, chocolate OR alcohol. It may not cause you to act irratically, but it is certainly a VERY addictive drug...

I had thought of nicotene, and actually figured it would come up sooner than this... I was just setting back waiting for things to die down before I mentioned it.

I saw a test put on by Highway patrol on TV where they had these young drivers on the driver course with popup dogs, humans, curves etc.
The young people just breezed through the course and laughed that the ones doing the test said that one drink would have an effect on them. Well after one drink, they everyone knocked down markers, killed dogs, humans and couldn't believe that just one drink of acohol did that to them.

Nor I. Nor would I entertain the notion that there is some kind of correspondence between beverage alcohol and caffeine. Offhand, though, I find little practical difference between sugar and caffeine; most of what can be criticized in the latter is present in the former, and pretty much nobody wants to forbid sugar to the faithful Christian.

Alcohol's problems are not that it can be scientifically labeled "a drug." Its problems, whatever they are, are clearly attested in Scripture, history, and life. Its scientific classification is beside the point.

We rely on our ability to perceive a multitude of information when we drive (speed limit, road signs, other cars, etc.) If even a mild dose of alcohol compromises our ability to take in some of this information, in other words, limits our attention span, then it seems likely that our driving ability may also be compromised ... If you've had one drink, you may be so focused on paying attention to your speed so as not to get pulled over, that you completely miss seeing the pedestrian that walks directly in front of your car."

So you think you can drive just fine after only one stiff drink?
New research by the University of Washington may make you think again: Most of the study participants who had had only one cocktail didn't even notice a gorilla walking through the middle of a ballgame.
That's right. The UW researchers tested people while they focused intently on a single task — counting the number of basketball passes in a video. Most of them couldn't see much else, such as realize that the clip features a woman in an ape suit who suddenly walks to center screen, beats her chest and exits — a nine-second cameo.
They were twice as likely to miss it as nondrinkers

Alcohol makes you less alert. At the same time, it gives you a strong, but false, sense of confidence. Even one drink affects your judgement. It becomes more difficult to judge distance and speeds clearly. It will also take you longer to stop. You'll have a tendency to take greater risks, such as overtaking and driving too fast.
Alcohol also impairs your ability to say no, which means that after one drink, it's difficult to say no to another!

Coffee or candy bar will not do that.

It's already on the blacklist. Unlike alcohol, no BB'ers defend it; so there's no motive for condemning it.

    Alcohol: The ABCs

    http://corp.aadac.com/alcohol/the_basics_about_alcohol/alcohol_abcs.asp

It is one of the most potent, devastating, addictive, destructive, drugs known to mankind. It is a killer, a menace--has killed more people, destroyed more families, than any other drug known to mankind. To say that it is not a drug is a bare-faced lie.

Science, however, does find a difference between the two as I've shown.

Caffeine's problems have also been shown thanks to research. How is it possible that we can ignore those issues and still claim to be treating our body as the temple of God? (I would also be perfectly willing to debate the sinfulness of obesity caused by gluttony, which is in the same category as excessive caffeine consumption.)

DHK, are you implying that someone DID say it's not a drug?

Let me try to state this a little more clearly: on the basis of what you've shown, I see little p-r-a-c-t-i-c-a-l difference between sugar and caffeine. The differences are innumerable, but the practical differences are negligible.

Everything DHK just said is true. In contrast, what can one say against caffeine? "It's probably bad for you, even though those who drink coffee live into their 80s at about the same rate as those who don't."

The two categories are so far apart, it takes effort to even consider them at the same time.

I take a few days off and come back to five cotten-pickin pages on coffee!

Well, I am here to tell you that there are lots of things in life that I can't enjoy because of Celiacs BUT coffee is one thing I can enjoy and I do. I buy Starbuck's by the big bag and make a big pot every day.

Life without coffee is mmmmm not worth much

As I've mentioned before, everytime I see your pix I smell pipe tobacco. Rich and deep. I wouldn't smoke it, but I love to smell it :D
